In the Pure Rawk Awards 2011, Obsessive Compulsive ended up walking away with the 'Album of the Year' award. The band were also nominated for 'Band of the Year' and 'Video of the Year for $$' as reported in this post. This year the band are hoping to get some nominations again, particularly for 'Band of the Year' and 'Video of the Year for Man vs. Machine'.

OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE: THERE'S NOTHING IN LIFE WE'D WANT TO DO MORE THAN THIS

You’d have to search the UK underground pretty hard to find a band more dedicated than Obsessive Compulsive. On the typical day SinZine caught up with them, the Manchester foursome were in Camden to play not one, but two, gigs. Fusing elements of punk, rock and metal, and going from opening for metal supergroup The Damned Things, to headlining an acoustic night in a matter of hours, they’re hard to tie down to any one genre or scene, but wherever they appear they never fail to impress.
You’re in London tonight for a bit of Download warm-up. The big show is of course, opening for The Damned Things at Dingwalls, what drew you to that band?

Kelii (vocals): We got asked to do it! But yeah, they’re a pretty cool upcoming band, but they also got some heavyweight names with Scott Ian from Anthrax and all the rest. We think we’ve got a similar heaviness to them and we think we’ll go down well with their crowd, so it should be good!

Not content with just one gig, you’re popping down the road for a stripped down acoustic set at The Worlds End after. Was one gig not enough for the night?
Kelii: No, we’re just greedy!
Giz (guitars): It probably would have been easier just to play one gig, but we’re not really known for doing things the easy way. So we’re going to leg it up the street with our acoustic guitars after this show and do some unplugged stuff.
Kelii: And depress everyone in the venue! They’re going to have some good time rock n roll with Heavens Basement and Skin (we’re quite gutted we’re going to miss that) and then we’re going to come on and do loads of morbid depressed songs about how rubbish life is.
Has it been hard to put together an acoustic set?
Kelii: It’s been a huge challenge. It’s not something we’ve every really considered doing before, but we got offered a slot on the acoustic stage at Download and we couldn’t pass up that kind of opportunity. So we’re rising to the challenge, as we always do.
Giz: It’s really good to be put in a different situation, it’s really healthy to do something we’re not used to doing, that you’ve got to adapt to. It’s really good for you and people should do it more often.
Kelii: We’re well out of our comfort zone on this one!
Giz: We got asked to do it and it was only about three hours later we realised we didn’t even have any acoustic guitars!
You’ve recently put together a video piece, Transmissions, about the band and made it available online. What was the thinking behind that?
Giz: When people see a video or hear a song, that’s great because that’s what it’s all about, but it’s also interesting to see what happens behind the scenes. Hopefully there’s going to be more of these to come.
Kelii: That’s the plan! Youtube and video in general is really big now, and it’s a really accessible way for people to discover a lot about a band really quickly, so we thought we’d better move with the times!
Obviously video is going more the way of the key promotion for a band than radio these days, is that something you’re going to start pushing more?
Kelii: We have loads of fun making videos. We’ve not got much money, so we’ve not had as much opportunity to make the videos we’d like to make, it’s very expensive to realise the ideas you want on video. We’re working a lot with smaller companies who are starting out, trying to get good deals, but also get their work seen too. It’s helped us a lot.
With the album Dreams Of Death And The Death Of Dreams having been out a while now, do you feel you’ve achieved what you hoped to with this record?
Kelii: In some ways yes, it’s been a really good vehicle to progress. But with downloads being so huge, and everyone being so skint (which we can relate to!), it has sold really well, but it’s not really been enough.
Giz: We’re DIY and we’ve put this together ourselves, we’re not rich people and we’re not making money out of putting an album out, but that was never the intention. But as far as getting our music out there, getting people to listen to it and hearing their responses, it’s been great. We’re really proud of the album and what we’ve achieved with it.
What ideas do you have floating around for the next record, and where are you going with them at the moment?
Kelii: We’ve started to write some songs, though we don’t tend to think in terms of an album, that’s not how we write really. Not doing many gigs early this year, we had a chance to do some creative thinking rather than constantly touring, so we’ve started doing a bit of writing and its sounding cool. It’s early days yet though.
Giz: We’ve not got any plans for definite of times to go in the studio, we’re going to take the next few months however they come and just keep writing. We’d like to get something out there really soon, but it would be really nice to get out on the road more soon, as we have had a few quiet months.
You’ve always been a very driven band, always pushing for the next thing, to do whatever you can to get out there to new people. Do you ever get tired of pushing yourselves so hard?
Giz: Sometimes it can be hard, and it would be nice to have a bit of help from people, because this is our life, this is what we do and this is us 24/7. We love what we do and it’s always going to be that way, but sometimes doing all this and having to pay the rent and survive, it can be really hard. At the end of the day though, I don’t think any of us would change it for the world.
Kelii: We have our moments of weakness, but it’s literally moments, we love what we do so much, we’ll always work as hard as it takes to get our music out there.
Do you think you’ll ever reach a point where this ceases to be important to you?
Giz: I don’t think music will ever cease to be important to us, it’s such a massive part of our lives. Whether there will be a point in time where we decide we’re not going to write songs together as Obsessive Compulsive I don’t know, I hope not, but music is such a big part of our lives I don’t think that will ever leave any of us.
Kelii: If we were going to quit, we would have quit by now. I think there’s a lot of bands that have got to the low points that we’ve had and called it a day, but for us whenever we feel like that, we just remember that there’s nothing in life we’d want to do more than this.
Dani (drums): I don’t think anything’s really going to change. I’ve been doing this since I was eleven or twelve and it’s what I’ve always wanted to do. Like Kelii says, if we’d wanted to quit, we’d have done it long ago.

Camden Review - 8th June

Planet Loud have written a review of the Pre-Download Acoustic Night at World's End in Camden on June 8th where Obsessive Compulsive played an acoustic set along with Slaves to Gravity, Heaven's Basement, Jettblack and Skin. You can read the full review here, but we've pulled out a paragraph reviewing our beloved band:

"Finally, and fresh from a gig opening for The Damned Things, Obsessive Compulsive’s guitarist Giz and singer Kelii gave us some superb alternative renditions from their impressive “Dreams Of Death And The Death Of Dreams” album… plus a new song. Having never seen Obsessive Compulsive live before, I was not prepared for the full effect of Kelii’s brilliant vocal talent. The way she was able to build up the intensity in “A Cocktail Of Toxins” and play with the dynamics of the other tracks was great to hear. New song “Fight Or Flight” sounded good alongside a well played “The Decay Of Hope”. They finished their set in raucous fashion with “Exit”, Kelii’s voice now with a touch more huskiness to it and all in attendance suitably impressed."

Anger, energy, intensity, belief…these are the essential ingredients in all great rock ‘n’ roll and Manchester’s Obsessive Compulsive have them all in abundance. With their debut full-length album, Dreams Of Death & The Death Of Dreams, this young band are poised to make a huge and lasting impact on the UK rock scene and, if there’s any justice, far beyond.

Hello y’all from Obsessive Compulsive, firstly I would like to say thank you for giving us this interview for Grave Concerns.

Phill – Can I ask you all who you are and where you hail from?

OC – Kelii (vocals) and Giz (guitar) are from Manchester, Pete (bass) is originally from Portsmouth but has lived in Manchester for about 8 years and Dani (drums) is from Chester.

Phill – How did you come to the name Obsessive Compulsive?

OC (Kelii) – It was just something I had written down in a book many years ago, I have loads of notebooks that I just write things down in that come into my head, to remember them, for inspiration for songs etc, it probably would have ended up as a song title but it worked for us as a band name, we like the fact that it describes how we feel about music, we are obsessive about music and compulsive about making music, we’re very passionate about what we do, it’s an obsession and a compulsion.

Phill – What brought the band together?

OC – Kelii and Giz met at a rehearsal room in their teens, we were in different bands but eventually came to a place where we both wanted to do something new, so we started working on some songs together and it just clicked, it took us a while to find the rest of the guys, we went through a hell of a lot of time trying out bassists and drummers and even after we started putting out EPs properly as a band with Pete on bass we struggled to keep a drummer until we found Dani, we feel this is the strongest line up ever, we all love and respect each other hugely and our writing is stronger than ever and we’re all on the same page, we all work equally hard and all want to commit our entire lives to being in this band, for richer or poorer as they say!

Phill – You quote that you adhere to a DIY philosophy, can you explain this a little more to us?

OC – It’s pretty simple, don’t expect the world to do you a favour, if you want something you have to be willing to work hard at it from a grassroots perspective, we’re not saying we wouldn’t work with labels, agents, managers etc, but we don’t EXPECT anyone else to do our dirty work for us. If you’re not willing to stand outside gigs in the rain handing out flyers, book your own tours and sort out your own recordings and sell your CDs yourself then how can you expect anyone else to make that effort. We really just believe in hard work and determination.

Phill – What is the importance of you staying independent?

OC – It’s essential that we retain our independence as musicians and nobody tells us what direction to take our music in, and it’s important that we are fully aware of every decision we make as a band and that we are all happy with any decisions made. We would love to continue to release our material on our own label in the UK, but it’s an expensive and time consuming game, and in some situations, there are people with more expertise, experience and ability than you, so of course we would collaborate with other industry professionals to help us get our music out there and to help us to have more time to concentrate on creating the best music we can, when you get to a certain level, it’s not as easy to stay independent, you at least need some people helping out, because you get to a point where you physically can’t deal with all the beaurocracy yourself!

Phill – In 2009 you worked with producer Russ Russell of Napalm Death fame, what do you feel working with someone of an extreme metal background and also of great experience brought to your music?

OC – Russ has a great CV, not just in extreme metal although he IS probably most famous for working with Napalm Death, he is a very intelligent, eclectic person, he loves music and has loads of ideas, he knows how to get the best out of a band in the recording process, clearly, he was very enthusiastic, he’s got a fantastic ear for melodies and harmonies, he’s just got great skills all round. It was an honour to work with someone so brilliant and we think he helped us create the best album we had in us, we’re very proud of it.

Phill – So what is everyone’s musical influences?

OC – We’re all into so much different stuff, it’s almost impossible to sum it up, Pete loves his eighties alternative rock, he’s a huge old school thrash fan and he also loves quirky songwriters like Randy Newman and Rolf Harris! Kelii likes loads of grunge era stuff, like STP, Pixies, Pumpkins, Soundgarden… tons of old school punk as well as a bit of the new stuff, massively melodic songwriters, hip hop, quirky amazing artists like Bowie, PJ Harvey, Patti Smith, Bjork, Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Kate Bush… Giz loves delta blues, flamenco and country guitar as well as loads of dark, gothy stuff like Paradise Lost, Danzig, Sisters of Mercy and then fast rock n roll bands like Supersuckers and Backyard Babies…. Loads of Riot Grrl stuff too like L7, Hole, The Breeders…. Dani is a metal head at heart, he loves techy stuff like Dillinger Escape Plan, Sikth etc, loads of 90s metal, as well as kickass British rock bands like The Wildhearts, Motorhead, Therapy… Between us we could probably list 10000 influences, which is why we think our music comes out sounding a little different and isn’t easily categorised.

Phill – How has your music evolved since you began playing together?

OC – We’ve always had our own sound which initially came from Kelii’s voice with Giz’s guitar ideas, but it has just grown and developed naturally over the years as we have written more as a band, learnt, experienced, grown, made mistakes, discovered new ways of thinking…. It’s just a very organic, natural thing, so of course it will grow and change shape as everything else in life does.

Phill – Is there a particular song that you are called on to play most?

OC – Not really, all of our songs are quite different and we get all different types of people at our shows, so everyone likes different songs, we get asked to play our older stuff quite a lot, which we do do sometimes, but we prefer to move forward and when we have new stuff we obviously want to play that the most cos it’s fresh and exciting for us.

Phill – You have been asked to play Download this year, how does this make you feel and do you think there will be any lasting effects or changes to the band?

OC – We’re extremely excited and honoured to be playing Download, we’ve all attended the festival as fans for many years and it’s quite surreal to see ourselves on the bill. We hope it will help us to get some more exposure and maybe some exciting gigs, but to be honest, everything we’ve done has been in little gradual steps, we’ve worked hard for a good few years now and this hasn’t happened out of the blue or overnight for us, so I don’t think there will be a significant jump or change overnight in this situation either, it’s another rung on the ladder for our band. It feels good to be building things solidly and we feel we’ve earned this. One thing that makes it more interesting is that we’ve been asked to play the ‘acoustic’ stage, something we’ve never done before, so this will be a challenge, and for anyone seeing us the first time may be a little different than what they’d expect, so we hope people will enjoy the acoustic version as much as the heavy, energetic plugged in OC, and maybe come and catch us on tour to see us in our more natural state too!

Phill – This year you won album of the year at The Pure Rawk Awards with Death Of Dreams, many congratulations on getting the award. Do you think this has helped increase your notoriety? And as a band has this had any notable positive effect, such as helping you to Download?

OC – Yeah we were over the moon to win an award at the Pure Rawks, and album of the year was the best one we could have hoped for to top of an amazing year of achievements with ‘Dreams of Death…’ . It’s always very nice to be given a pat on the back. Nix and the team at Pure Rawk do sterling work for the underground, unsung, unsigned bands that are rocking the shit out of small venues in the UK, it’s essential that there are magazines like this featuring up and coming artists and giving a chance to bands who don’t have the financial backing or huge PR boost that big labels can provide, but are making really great music and working hard. We have huge respect for the underground press, it’s where the true opinions on new music are, so it’s ace to be appreciated for genuine reasons

Phill – Is there anywhere you have played that has been memorable good or bad? And is there anywhere you would like to play and why?

OC – Every gig we do is memorable, we’ve had gigs where we’ve all sat outside in the van afterwards in silence wondering what we’re doing with our lives, and we’ve had euphoric gigs where we just give each other a big kiss afterwards and tell each other how awesome they are, we’ve played the corner of a sticky pub to one man and his dog, and we’ve played huge stages to a thousand people, we’ve played shows to goths, punks, metallers, indie fans, kids, mums and dads, the other bands… We’ve supported some of our favourite artists and had some amazing, inspirational, smaller bands on the bill with us too. We’ve played beautiful shows with our mates bands, and shows where none of the other bands even bother to say hello. We’ve broken down on the way to and from gigs, we’ve been lost in a new town more times than I can remember, we’ve shown up to venues 4 hours away to find that it has closed down and nobody bothered to inform us, we’ve been shown huge love when we’re miles from home, we’ve argued, made up, been drunk together, thrown up together, cried together, and more than anything laughed together, we live for the road, the whole thing is one big memorable experience, the good, the bad AND the ugly. All we really want to do is keep touring, everywhere and anywhere, for as long as possible!

Phill – Do you remember the first gig you ever played, where was it and what are you memories of that day?

OC – I remember the first gig OC played, it was at The Cavern in Exeter and I think the world cup or something was on cos we had to wait for it to finish before we could go onstage. Bloody football! It was a good gig from what I recall!

Phill – I’ve seen some pretty good press about you peeps out there, is there any article that sticks out in your mind?

OC – It’s nice when people say nice things and it’s a bit irritating to read bad things but we don’t tend to take any of it too seriously, it’s all just one person’s opinion after all, what matters more is that we’re making the music that we’re proud of and that people who buy the CDs and come to the gigs seem to enjoy it. No review is ever going to match the feeling of a roomful of people singing your songs back to you at a sweaty gig.

Phill – What is the biggest challenge you have had as a band and how did you overcome this challenge?

OC – Haha, I feel a bit like a stuck record here but band life is a series of challenges, we’ve had so many ups and downs over the years it would be hard to pick some kind of champion challenge, I guess the main difficulty for us has been keeping a drummer, when your line up is incomplete it incapacitates you, so that’s just incredibly frustrating for the rest of us, but we have always just kept our heads down and kept fighting, and we’re still here!

Phill – So what are rehearsals like for you guys and how do songs get life?

OC – Rehearsals for us are fairly relaxed but we work hard, as in all areas of our band life, we’re there to nail the songs, work on tricky parts and write new material so that’s what we do! It’s not very exciting for anyone else really, we just knuckle down!

Phill – So how do you all balance your everyday life with band life?

OC – Our everyday life IS our band life really, we all have to work jobs to support ourselves but that’s really just a means to an end, the majority of our time is spent rehearsing, writing, promoting the band, answering interview questions like this, planning tours, designing posters/flyers, flyering and postering, packaging up and posting merchandise we’ve sold online, loads of other tedious and boring stuff that involves being on the laptop all night replying to emails, then when we’re not doing all that or working to pay the rent we’re usually driving ourselves around the UK, asking to sleep on your floor, playing shows! It’s hard to hold down (or even find) a job sometimes, because for all of us the band comes first, so the work has to be very flexible, and sometimes we don’t have time to work as much as we need to, so we’re all usually really skint! But we love what we do, and wouldn’t change it for anything, you take the rough with the smooth.

Phill – Have you any advice for anyone who is trying to make it in the music industry?

OC – It’s a very difficult time for musicians, it depends what you mean by ‘make it’ – we don’t really think in those terms, all we do is think about the next tour, the next album etc, because gone are the days when you get picked up by some big label and become a big famous, rich rock star, we’re in it for the music, and I think you’ve got to be if you’re going to have any longevity nowadays. If you want to be rich and famous this is the last thing I’d advise you to do as a career!

Phill – Keli have you come up against any prejudice being a woman in a male dominated industry?

OC – Oh I have the usual Neanderthal men in small pubs we’re playing telling me not to attempt to lift the heavy equipment I’ve been happily lugging in and out of vans and venues for most of my life but I just laugh at them really. I think most music fans that come to our gigs are pretty intelligent, open minded, non-prejudiced individuals, and most of the bands we play with are too so no I don’t feel I’m treated differently, I don’t even think about it most of the time, I can look after myself if I need to, I think because I don’t make a big deal about being a girl in a male dominated industry that it doesn’t come up as much, some girls in bands really are all about the tits and ass, which is a bit sad, I’m not interested in being like that, and that’s quite apparent to anyone who’s seen us play, so I get treated with the respect I treat myself with. Come on! This is 2011! Do we really need to keep on making gender an issue?!

Phill – What’s the most embarrassing think any member of the band had done?

OC – I think we’re all pretty shameless, other people might be embarrassed by things we have done but I don’t think any of us really care!

Phill – What’s your favourite thing to do while drunk?

OC – Dance to the Violent Femmes.

Phill – What’s your favourite drinking game?

OC – That’s not really our thing to be honest, we like a drink, but we don’t really make a game out of it, we just prefer to get messy without any rules!

Phill – What’s your favourite place to get drunk in Manchester?

OC – Probably GC, the Salisbury, Gullivers or The Castle, but wherever we’re around friends and good music really, there’s loads of great bars and pubs in Manchester we’re spoilt for choice.

Phill – Console wise what do you prefer Xbox, PS3 or Wii and what game are you playing if any?

OC – Only Dani is into this stuff so he says: PS3 all the way, and I'm playing Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops and Gran Turismo!

Phill – Does anyone have a favourite gadget, gizmo or watchyama call it?

OC – I guess that would have to be the trusty band ipod, it is a life saver on long journeys; it’s got everything from Akercocke to ZZ top!

Phill – If you were stranded on a desert island what three things could you not do without?

OC – guitar, drums, and pen and paper.

Phill – Thank you so much for giving us an interview is there anything you would like to add?

OC – I think you’ve been pretty thorough! We’re still a very small band, releasing music completely independently, so if anyone reading this checks us out it’s awesome, and if you buy our album even better! Thanks!

Obsessive Compulsive will be playing Download Festival on Friday June 10th. The band will be playing an acoustic set on the Jagermeister stage at 3pm. An acoustic set alone is a rarity for the band so seeing as the event will take place at Download is even more spectacular. Check out the band's artist page on the Download website. Obsessive Compulsive will be supporting The Damned Things at Dingwalls in London on June 8th, Puddle of Mudd have just been announced as main support for this show! This is a brilliant addition to the line-up and will hopefully allow the band to reach a wider audience supporting these bands.

For those who don't know, Puddle of Mudd are an American alternative rock band from Missouri. The band have sold over 7 million albums and have had a string of #1 mainstream rock singles in America.

The band have just announced their first Manchester headline gig in ages! Make sure you're free on Friday May 13th between 7 and 10pm and head for Satan's Hollow on Princess Street in Manchester. The band will be on stage around 8.45pm for about an hour. Support info is still to come. Tickets are £5 in advance, available from Extreme Largeness in Afflecks and Rockers England on Oldham Street or alternatively you can purchase them from the ObCom website (http://www.obsessivecompulsiveband.com/) and just add an extra 50p for them to be posted out to you. Obsessive Compulsive wins Pure Rawk Award for 'Album of the Year'

Massive congratulations to Obsessive Compulsive for snatching the 'Album of the Year' award at the 5th Pure Rawk Awards last night and a massively huge thanks to everyone that voted. The band fought off competition from Arthemis, Dead Identities, King Lizard, Shush and Supercharger to get the award. Check out the awesomely cool picture of Kelii with the award just to the right.

The band were also nominated for 'Band of the Year' and 'Video of the Year' for '$$' but sadly lost out to Black Spiders and Eureka Machines/Ash TV for 'These are the People Who Live in My House' respectively. This is a brilliant achievement and here's hoping that the band have many more awards to come throughout the year!

Autumn Tour Starts Tomorrow! / Fan Review of August Manchester Gig!/ Videos / Poll & More!

Been meaning to post this for ages but due to complications haven't been able to! Thanks to Paul Warbrick for sending us his review and experience of the show:

"Well Tuesday 10 August was Ob Com'S support slot for US-all girl rock band 'Civet', and belated birthday gig for Kelii.
Before OC, we had an Austrian group called The Forum Walters, followed by Final Summation - USA male rockers. Then it was time to bring on the girls... The Smears are a female, raunchy PUNK-ROCK trio, with a voluptuous lead singer in Fishnets and Basqe style dress. They sure got the males in the crowd to the front and the photographers snapping.

Around 9.30pm ,it was time for Kelii and the lads to take centre stage, and perform a 6 song set of songs from current CD. There was quite a bit of interest from the 'Clickers' getting every opportunity to get close-ups of the band.

Obcom began with Autopsy , then powered their way (in their usual style) theough the set, ending on $$. I,as usual , was at front and took video footage of 2 songs on Mobile Phone.( This will be viewable on my YOUTUBE CHANNEL www.youtube/thegigguy soon).

"It escapes me as to why Obsessive Compulsive aren't massive. Their brand of charismatic punk metal teamed with atmospheric tendencies has found them a loyal following on the underground. Along with their constant touring and mustering two EP's into their catalogue, it seems hard work isn't something they're strangers to.

Making their mark with Dreams Of Death And The Death Of Dreams, Obsessive Compulsive take their sound to an angrier, heavier and catchier extreme. What was found on the previous release - The Corpses of Thought was seemingly a signifier of the things to come. Yet the EP doesn't quite encompass the entirety of the soundscapes that can be boasted on the band's debut album. The atmosphere is more chilling, the lyrics are more passionate and the melodies are as genius as ever.

'Spit The Medicine' sees the band at their heaviest, perfectly complimented by Kelii's raw and passionate vocal performance, whilst 'Future Closing In' is the closest to sound of debut EP, 'a demon for every occasion'. It's interesting to see how much the band have developed over their years together, yet the music still sounds cohesive and works together perfectly to form an album as dynamic and engaging as DODATDOD.

Standout tracks come when the band experiment with their sound - on the hypnotic 'Hell Is A Circle' and the climatic 'The Decay Of Hope'. Not only do Obsessive Compulsive excel in hard-hitting punk, brooding down-tempo also seems to be a field of expertise for the band and 'Virago' finds a middle-ground between the two - managing to harness Giz's rigorous shredding alongside the lyrical honesty and beautifully delivered chorus.

Welcome to the new look for the fansite! Hopefully everything looks a bit smarter and easier to get around now, things were starting to get a little bit cluttered. We've also blasted into ObCom 2010 with the site design taking inspiration from the band's brand new mini website and the recent t-shirt designs by CARP.

We now have links at the bottom of each post where you can re-post the article to your own Facebook/Twitter/Blog or e-mail it to somebody else. And speaking of Twitter, we now have our very own Twitter page, so please follow us on there if you want to hear us tweet.

This isn't the end of our site updates either, we plan to bring you more stuff throughout the rest of the year. We'll be adding more pages and we'll be taking into consideration your feedback from our current poll, so please vote if you haven't done so already.

As for band news, we'll be updating with a couple of things to catch up on that we've lagged behind with. The most important thing right now though following an announcement on Facebook yesterday that the band have had to pull out of the Damaged Stock, Rock City in Nottingham gig in August. The Night and Day show in Manchester supporting Civet will be OC's last until August. More when we hear it.

Kelii and Giz were on Preston FM last night talking to Vicky Bradley. I missed the show due to computer issues but apparantly Kelii and Giz chatted and 'Exit' was played.

This is clearly a band with something to say. From the start its abundantly clear that this is no half baked album, rife with filler tracks and commercial hooks. It is instead a lean, muscular killing machine ready to ram its message of self belief and determination so far down your throat you’ll choke to death on its anti-establishment ideals. Songs such as ‘$$’ and ‘Spit The Medicine’ are as ferocious as they are poignant whilst songs such as ‘The Decay Of Hope’ and ‘A Cocktail Of Toxins’, though slower in tempo and brutality, demonstrate an ability to convey all the same anger and resentment in a much more malicious and refined way.
This self propelled band give the impression that you can either: like their music and appreciate what they have to say, or, be crushed beneath their inexorable rise to great heights.

We've added the setlist for The Roadhouse show to our 'Tour' page now along with a couple of other bits of information. The band hit the stage just before 7pm and played a six-song set. The patch that has been around since 2006 sold out at this gig too along with the black 'Dying, Dying, Dead' t-shirt as well. There were still some of the green and purple 'Dreams of Death' limited edition t-shirts available for sale though. If anyone has any more information or pictures or video from either this gig or the London gig the following day at The Gaff, please leave us a Facebook comment or message or e-mail us. If anyone fancies writing in and telling us about their own experiences of the gigs (or any other ObCom gig for the matter) please get writing!

Don't forget the band will be playing two gigs this weekend too. A free gig at Gasworks in Bradord on the 23rd and supporting William Control at Rock City in Nottingham on the 24th. Don't miss out if you're in the area!

After many years as a band, and with two shit-kicking EPs already to their name, Obsessive Compulsive have finally put out their eagerly awaited (by us here at Pure Rawk anyway) debut album. Kelii from the band takes a few minutes to tell us all about it.

You’ve just about finished some intensive touring promoting the new album, Dreams of Death and the Death of Dreams, how has that been?
Lots of fun as always, we did about 21 shows in a month, 5 of which were with Sorry and the Sinatras who we became great friends with, awesome boys. There are always highs and lows but I’d say this was the best tour we’ve done so far overall.

This tour has taken you to some of the less obvious venues on the circuit – was that a conscious decision or a desire to play wherever you could? Club Antichrist in London for instance…
We have wanted to do Antichrist for ages, it’s a busy club night and a great way to get across to new fans. In London it’s particularly difficult to get shows where there’s a large captive audience who aren’t already there to see you, club nights like this are perfect so we’re always up for doing them.
You’re right though, we just want to play as many shows in as many different places as possible, we couldn’t give a toss about whether a venue is a known circuit one or not, if there’s a decent promoter and an appreciative audience we’ll be there!

Any particularly memorable moments from the tour? Any great bands you played with we should know about?
We played with a great band called The Front in Derby, from Wyoming USA, very cool, definitely check them out, and one of the funniest people on the planet, Captain Hotknives, in Halifax. After the Manchester show with SATS we had a particularly late night and Ginger from The Wildhearts ended up sleeping on our couch! The load out was very painful after a few hours sleep the next day, especially for Lenny because he drew the short straw and wound up sleeping on our cold, hard kitchen floor.

So tell us a little about the new album – what inspired the songs, and is there any overarching direction or message?
We had a lot of problems during the period most of the songs were written, things were really tough, we were (and still are!) all really broke and struggling to make ends meet. Just as we were starting to think about writing an album our drummer quit, then came back for a bit, then quit again, so we kept on losing momentum and, as a band that has been working hard and touring, releasing EPs and stuff for quite a long time, the setbacks were just unbearable!
On top of that we were looking at the world and the music industry and seeing ridiculous, unfair things, watching our friends and families struggling with all sorts of troubles and generally feeling like the odds were massively stacked against us and everyone around us. So we channelled a lot of anger and frustration into our song writing, in some ways it’s quite a bleak album lyrically but hopefully people will be able to see the fight that’s there also, the defiance and determination to not just be swept away with the trash. We love what we do and will always fight our corner till the bitter end, hopefully that came across too!

It’s been quite a while coming as a debut, any particular reason, or do you just feel this just the right time for you?
Like I mentioned, the drummer situation really held us back, I’d say it put the album back at least a year, we’ve had many of the songs in some kind of semi-written state for some time but we wanted to work on them as a complete band, rehearse them, play them live and make sure they were as good as they could be before we put them on an album, so we had to wait until things with the line up were stable and we could get in a rehearsal room and knuckle down, then we wanted to play some shows to let the songs develop and grow into themselves rather than just go in the studio right away.
So we did all that and then started looking for the right studio or producer to work with. We knew it was a long time coming anyway so we wanted to make sure everything was just right and release a really great sounding album, with great songs, rather than rushing into things and coming out with something we weren’t completely happy with. We’re really happy with how it’s all turned out so we reckon it was worth taking our time over.

How was it working with Russ Russell on the album? With the band’s broad range of influences and sounds, did he ‘get’ what you were trying to do with it?
We hit it off with Russ right away, he checked out some of our older stuff online, loved it, then we sent him some terrible sounding rehearsal tapes of the new ideas. He could hear that we had some kickass tunes despite the bad recordings so he came up to Manchester to a rehearsal, was impressed with what he saw and heard and we all went out to see Therapy? afterwards and had a good old drinking sesh. We got on like a house on fire and it really got all of us excited about working together.
It was most definitely the most fun any of us have ever had in the studio, Russ is so full of enthusiasm, energy, ideas, he’s absolutely amazing and we love him to bits. He’s quite famous for working with much heavier bands than us like Napalm Death, Dimmu Borgir etc, but he’s done stuff with bands like The Exploited and The Wildhearts too, he’s very eclectic, loves all kinds of music, as do we, so we didn’t feel there were any restrictions on us or communication issues musically.

Given that a lot of the fans will have heard the album material live and now on record, what has their response been?
Overwhelmingly positive. We make music to please ourselves firstly, if you’re not impressed by what you do then it’s worth nothing, in my opinion, but once your job is done then the most important opinions out there are of the people who buy your album and come to the shows. It’s very important to us that people feel they are getting their money’s worth, it’s a difficult time for music sales and if someone’s actually bothered to buy your album you really want them to be glad they did, and we’ve had so many amazing messages on our Facebook and MySpace pages, emails, and in person at gigs. Our existing fans love the album and we’re winning over loads of new ones with it as well, which we’re ecstatic about!

You’ve also done your first video for the lead single $$ – how was that? My experience of filming videos is usually a lot of standing around waiting for someone to get something ‘right’ for the shot…
We had the most fun day EVER making that video, we did it on a really small budget with a really amazing bunch of lads, Sitcom Soldiers, who are based near us in Bolton but they are going stellar with the bands they’re working with now.
We did it in the basement of our friend’s shop and had to lug all of our, and their equipment down the most treacherous staircase/ladder ever, which we just about managed to survive, then it was an intense 5 or 6 hours of pretty much constant filming, there wasn’t much sitting around at all, and when there was we were really grateful of the rest, the main thing we wanted for the vid was loads of energy so we threw ourselves about and put everything we had into it for each take, by the end of it we were all completely and utterly exhausted. It was like playing 30 gigs in one day!

I understand that, as with the two EPs previously, you’ve done this all independently – how hard has that been?
Extremely hard in some ways, and in other ways easier than you might think. It takes a lot of planning to release an album seriously, which is how we did it this time, rather than just recording something, pressing it up and putting it on the merch stand at gigs. We have probably made every mistake possible, but we just keep learning and hopefully if we can sell enough of this album to be able to afford to make a second one, it will be a lot easier next time.

You’ve managed to get the video on the music channels, and the album out to a lot of the big retailers, how did you manage that?
Well we used a distributor, Code 7, who work with a lot of small labels, they shop the album to the retailers, major and independent, and then it’s up to them to decide if they want to stock it. We have it stocked in HMV and Fopp in Manchester now because this is our home town so we do well here on sales anyway, all the big online places are stocking it, Amazon, Play, HMV etc as well, and it’s selling pretty well so far, although we still have a long way to go!
We used Code 7’s parent company Plastichead for our digital distribution so it’s also available on iTunes, Spotify etc. We had a little help with the video, we decided to work with a PR guy to help us crack into some places we may not have been able to reach on our own, and he had some contacts at Scuzz so we got a foot in the door there, it still took a lot of pestering from him, us, our fans etc to get them to play the video though!
There are so many bands out there, it’s very difficult to raise your head above the crowd, and the bands that are on major labels or have big agents and managers have a lot more of an advantage over a band doing it entirely on their own, but we’re really proud of the song and the video and we think we deserve the airplay for sure!

Independence is an admirable stance to take, but by no means an easy one! Is this something you’re committed to sticking with as the band grows?
We do it ourselves because it gets things done quickly and how we want them doing, we don’t like the idea of sitting around waiting for someone to spoon-feed us, so we just get on with it as much as we can, and we’re very proud of our hard work ethic.
What people might misunderstand about us is that if a good agent came along, offered to book us some great shows, put us on some decent tours with bigger bands then of course we’d take up the offer if it felt like we were all on the same page. If a bigger label wanted to license our album in different territories, or someone came along who wanted to manage us who we really thought understood where we were coming from, respected our music, and could help us achieve much more than we can on our own then of course we’d look at working with them.
We’re not defiantly DIY to the point of cutting off our nose to spite our face and turning stuff down that could help us achieve our career goals, but we don’t think that sending out CDs to every label on the planet and then sitting and waiting for them to do everything for us is the only way. We chose to release this album on our own label because that’s what felt right for us. We didn’t shop it to any labels in the UK, it was a conscious decision that felt right at this point, we’re not against labels, but they don’t have all the power in this day and age, you CAN achieve an awful lot without them.

Goldbade frontman John Robb can now be seen on video over on Creative Times giving praise to Obsessive Compulsive. It's not the first time John has given praise to the band this week either, see this post. In the video John talks about how Manchester has always been an indie city rather than a rock city and why he thinks this might be about to change. We've typed out a transcript of his words on Obsessive Compulsive below:

"...Manchester has never actually had it's own kind-of rock bands but this may be about to change. There's a great band in town, a new band called Obsessive Compulsive. A female-fronted rock band who write mini-anthems that really directly reflect the lives of the fans who go and see them. Manchester punkband Goldblade frontman John Robb did a post on his blog yesterday about Obsessive Compulsive. The post was referring to an article in The Guardian by FUC51 who claimed that the Manchester music scene was "living in the past." John Robb hit back at the article using Obsessive Compulsive as an example to prove them wrong. We've included a snippet from his blog about the band below, to read the full thing, click here.

Planet Loud - You've been around as a band forever, what do you get out of the band these days?
Obsessive Compulsive - Hahah! We get pretty much the same out of the band as we always have, we just absolutely love playing music and touring so as long as we can continue to do that forever we're happy. These days we're getting to tour more than ever and we finally got our album recorded after many many setbacks along the way so there's loads going on at the moment, we're busy bunnies and very pleased with that!

Planet Loud - And you've got a new album coming out, care to plug it?
Obsessive Compulsive - It's called 'Dreams of Death and the Death of Dreams' and it was written over a couple of years of miserable struggle for us, we weren't sure when writing the songs if it was ever going to get recorded, we'd had our 3rd drummer quit twice in a year and were having a hard time finding a new one, our future as a band seemed pretty bleak, it's a really dark album full of the kind of doubts and questions people go through when they're trying to carve their path in life and it‘s proving difficult, it's also got a lot of anger and rebellion going on. We've always been a band that has had to fight for what we believe in rather than being handed success on a plate, it says a lot about us that we constantly keep spitting in the face of adversity. Many of our friends have been going through similar times in their lives recently too so we think the subject matter relates to everyone’s lives, not just ours. We managed to rope in legendary rock and metal producer Russ Russell (Napalm Death/Evile/The Wildhearts) to produce the album and he was an amazingly inspirational guy to be around, we think he's helped us to capture the heart of our sound on record for the first time and we even surprised ourselves with some of the ideas we came up with. We’re really proud of the record, the songs, the sound, the artwork, which was done by our friend, the incredibly talented artist, CARP, you really should buy it!

Planet Loud - What did you want to achieve with it?
Obsessive Compulsive - The main thing we wanted to achieve was to create something we were extremely proud of. We knew when making an album that a little more thought would go into how the songs worked together as a whole and we really enjoyed thinking along those lines, the songs came together as a reaction to a certain period in our lives so they all have something in common but we’re also really pleased that we have shown our eclecticism on this record too, it was nice to be able to write songs that spanned our creative spectrum and to have room to do that. We have poured our hearts and souls into making this record so the next thing is to get as many people as possible to check it out and get something out of it too.

Planet Loud - What inspired you as a writer on this album?
Obsessive Compulsive - As always with us it was the dark side of life, despair, rejection, anger, fear, hopelessness…. Chirpy things like that!

Planet Loud - Bearing in mind you're a very hands-on, DIY band, what was the recording of the album like?
Obsessive Compulsive - We were lucky enough that Russ liked us as a band and was willing to work with our minimal budget, he slotted us in between a couple of other things he had going on in December so we did 3 short runs of recording time, playing some gigs in between, and then we formed such a good bond with Russ and felt so sure he would come up trumps that we let him convince us he should do the final mixes himself in his home studio without us, we’ve always been big control freaks, this was a first for us and quite terrifying but it worked perfectly. This saved us money on studio hire and travel expenses too which was really good. The budget for this album was all our own money, no label or manager invested in us, so we were incredibly lucky to get such a great producer who helped us cut costs too. We had an absolute ball making the album, it was the most fun we’ve ever had in a studio.

Planet Loud - Do you like being in the studio?
Obsessive Compulsive - Giz absolutely loves it, the rest of us enjoy doing our bits but it can be very tiring and quite boring sometimes when you’re in the middle of nowhere listening to drums being tracked for 11 songs with only each other for company! As I said though, this was definitely the most fun studio experience we’ve ever had, Russ is INSANE, hilariously funny and full of enthusiasm for what he does and for what we were doing too, plus we love each other to bits and are used to making boring situations entertaining, we’ve spent enough long hours together in a van!

Planet Loud - I read you describing the band in a biog on the net that you're a dirty, hungry band. How do you keep that hunger?
Obsessive Compulsive - We just love music and we will always be hungry to create new songs, when we’re not on tour we’re bored out of our minds and always looking forward to getting back out there again, we don’t consciously need to try and keep our hunger for what we do, it’s just there, ingrained into our souls!

Planet Loud - I also read that you're not a band in it for the money? What if you won the lottery would you swap your van for a private jet?
Obsessive Compulsive - Nah we’d just pimp our van! If we were in it for the money we wouldn’t still be playing Grimsby after 7 or 8 years, we must be crazy!

Planet Loud - What is the nastiest venue you've ever played?
Obsessive Compulsive - We’ve played loads of grotty community centres and working men’s clubs but one of the worst places we played was Goole in Yorkshire, it was just grim, just before we went onstage there were riot vans, along with the majority of the audience, outside cos of some kind of chav/rocker war breaking out. It inspired ‘The Goole Rule’ which is that we never book gigs in pubs on estates in small towns in Yorkshire any more. No doubt we’ll break that rule at some point though!

Planet Loud -You're obviously a band who are in it for the music, what kind of music fan do you think the band appeal to?
Obsessive Compulsive - We see all different types of people at our gigs, the only people we don’t really see are trendy scenesters, we’re real and genuine so we attract real, genuine music fans.

Planet Loud - You describe some of your fans as a bit mad, what is the craziest thing to happen to you?
Obsessive Compulsive - Luckily we’ve not had too many scarily crazy fan moments yet, but we always get the town nutter at our gigs, bless em!

Planet Loud - Have you got a big male following Kelli?
Obsessive Compulsive - We don’t really focus on the fact that we have a female singer, we’re just a band, our audience is roughly 50/50 male/female, I think most of the people that come to see us are there for the music, I don’t do the ‘sexy’ thing on stage like some girls feel the need to do, I think most boys are scared of me actually!

Planet Loud - What are your plans for the future of Obsessive Compulsive?
Obsessive Compulsive - We want to sell enough copies of this album to be able to afford to record a second and we would just like to tour so much that we don’t need to rent our flats any more, our biggest dream is to tour Europe, Japan and the States, we just want to play every day!

Planet Loud - Being a very DIY band, what is your view on the filesharing situation? Are you in the "don't steal our work" category or the "if it's up there then people are obviously interested in our work" category?
Obsessive Compulsive - We’re somewhere in between, file sharing, MySpace etc has done wonders for the underground scene, without the internet we’d have struggled to get a lot of the shows we’ve had over the years, the electronic revolution has made it so much easier to get across to new fans outside of your home town and it’s really cool that you can check out a band in a magazine or on a flyer and just pop online and hear their songs. But it’s also saturated the band scene, anyone can record some stuff and put it on MySpace, it makes it harder to raise your head above the crowd and downloading has devalued music, particularly for young people, it’s not so bad for huge rockstars that make millions from advertising deals and merch sales but bands like us really struggle financially and if no-one buys the album then we’re basically running at a massive loss, if we can’t afford to record again then no new albums will be made, so people really need to support the bands they like, if you check something out on a download and really love it then you should buy the album!

Planet Loud - Do you think Myspace has made being in a band too easy? Would you agree that too many bands expect success without doing little work? I personally think most bands would have given up a long time ago if they had to put in some real effort, do you agree/disagree?
Yeah this continues from what I said in the last answer, there are loads of poser bands with the right look and some slick tunes, pro-tooled to the nth degree, on MySpace, but put these bands in a cold van driving home from Aberdeen after playing to the other bands and bar staff, have them break down on the motorway at 4am in the rain and be towed home shivering and miserable, see how they survive playing night after night through bad PAs with crackling monitors, pulling out every ounce of your energy every night on stage after getting very little sleep on someone’s kitchen floor, no wonder many of the scene bands that are around get signed up to some flash label one minute and split up as soon as they’re put on tour! Your heart has to be in it, we live in a very fake, disposable society nowadays and everyone looks like a rock star online but it takes real guts, balls and soul to do it for real.

Planet Loud - Okay, thanks for your time, anything else to say?
Just support your local music scene, we’re constantly hearing about the awesome small venues we’ve played over the years closing down at the moment, people are spending far too much time on facebook and not enough time actually getting out there and experiencing life. Live music is one of the best pleasures to be experienced and there are bands like us playing your town for a few quid on the door night after night, the whole thing will die if you don’t support it and you’ll only have X-factor winners to listen to with no-one to blame but yourselves!"

"After many years together, countless tours, live shows and at least 2 EP releases, Obsessive Compulsive are finally unleashing an album upon their army of dedicated fans. “Dreams of Death and the Death of Dreams” is the debut full-length effort from the Manchester rockers, and it’s definitely filled with the angst and emotion that making an album undoubtedly involves. Opening track ‘$$’ tells a tale of determination, and singer Kelii’s unapologetic vocals warn; “You are the enemy, we will not be deceived, you’d better keep your dirty hands off my dreams”. So, that’s the listener put firmly in their place from the offset, and this album does not back down.

Produced by Russ Russell, known for his work with bands such as Napalm Death and Evile, each and every aspect of the band is captured, from grunge-laden riffs, to Kelii’s voice, which on this album is really given a chance to shine. And shine it does. At it’s most ferocious; “Dreams of Death” is not without its brooding, tender side. But make no mistake, even in the most macabre moments, that fierce attitude does not disappear; it’s there underneath all along, waiting to jump up and bite when you least expect it. ‘ The Decay of Hope’ showcases this brilliantly, mixing thoughtful lyrics with a sound of near despair, and never faltering away from what makes this album thrive; pure passion.

Standout tracks include ‘Spit the Medicine’, which offers a fast change of pace, and ‘Man vs. Machine’ which seems to personify the struggles of any band that just want their music to be heard. With a chorus which so boldly screams “I will not be machinery” it’s hard not to see what page this band are on, and if it encourages them to write an album like this, then that’s not necessarily a bad thing. - Rating [8]

'Dreams of Death and the Death of Dreams' has been reviewed by Sarah Cakebread in the new issue (Issue 123) of Big Cheese Magazine. The album received 3/5 stars which is the equivalent of a 'Happy Meal' in Big Cheese reviews. The issue featuring the review can be seen on the left featuring Green Day on the cover and is priced at £3.75 (£4.60 if purchased online). When you listen to a lot of music it is always an enchantment to come across a jewel that shines just a little brighter than the rest for all the components coming together to make the entire album something special to listen to. Such is the case with “The Death Of Dreams.” With an intriguing mix hard pounding rock with a female lead vocalist that keeps up with every note to perfection it makes for every song to worth listening to many times over.

There are so many standout songs on this album that it is near impossible to highlight just a few but there are some that just stood out for various reasons. "$$" has the flavor of Debbie Harry and Pat Benatar but only in the vocals and then adds in some kickass driving rock music that brings it to the 21st century and makes the sound all their own. "Man vs Machine" shows a great range of the musicians and the vocalist to cover everything from sultry and slow to the angry and angsty rock they display so well in all their songs without being depressing. "The Decay Of Hope" highlights the amazing talent of the singer by placing all the vocals in a lower range for a sultry and velvety sound to start that again is accompanied by amazing musical performances of the entire band and ends with a full on rock outro. "Autopsy" allows for each and every band member to shine their respective amazing talents with machine gun drumming with quick changeups and some amazing guitar shreds that serve as a bridge and yet seems not at all but just a brilliant show of their talent. It also comes together with a great bassline that anchors all of it. It is a stand out track of the album for hearing the intricacy of the music and the way all the elements are placed together for an amazing tune!

Recorded with Russ Russell (Napalm Death/Evile) brought out the perfect mix of sounds in this band with sultry vocals overlaid headbanging rock which does not sound like it would but it actually does PERFECTLY! Articulate writing of both the musical aspects and the lyrics make for the entire album a pleasure to listen to. So many bands say their music is all killer and no filler and Obsessive Compulsive truly delivers just that with each and every track on the album a song that becomes your favorite for the variety of tempos and feelings. There is not really a band to compare them to as their quality is impossible to compare to any other band. It would be easy to say they are like The Birthday Massacre or Slipknot but their music quite simply stands alone in its perfection and quality."

Obsessive Compulsive wrapped up THE DREAMS OF DEATH Spring 2010 Tour last night playing at The Vic Inn in Derby. The next gig the band currently has lined up is July 17th at The Roadhouse in Manchester with William Control.

We had the picture on the left tagged to our Facebook page yesterday too by Mark Lugubrious on the N-Y-M Rock Night, the image comes from the Preston gig on May 25th, where Kelii had her own beer - KELII'S COMPULSION for the night as part of a Battle of the Band Beers. Anyone else think this should be a regular thing?

Two new gigs have been added to our Tour page as well:

July 24 2010 - Rock City, Nottingham (supporting William Control)
October 14 2004 - The Face Bar, Reading

The July gig was posted on the band's official MySpace page and the latter in October is an event that we were invited to on Facebook.

Speaking of the tour section, it's been given a complete overhaul and might be given another over the coming weeks. Hopefully, it's now easier to use for upcoming gigs, we've provided all known information about gigs (door times, ticket prices, age restrictions, support etc.) and we've now included a link to where tickets can be purchased. For the archive, we've attempted to do the same, provide lots of information on past gigs and start adding setlists, images and videos. Kelii, Giz, Pete and Dani make up Obsessive Compulsive a four piece DIY rock band based in Manchester this is there first full length commercial album called Dreams of Death and The Death of Dreams.

Obsessive Compulsive’s album plots a journey through the dark mindscape of the group. Drifting through their poetic lyrics and refined guitar driven rifts, somewhat uncanny to those of Alice in Chains, yet posses the key originality, which sets them a part from other female led rock bands.

The track ‘Man vs Machine’ deals with their idealistic views of how they appeal to real music fans and I would have to agree in that it is raw and uncompromising. Furthermore the band seem to be thriving from being left to their own devices through record label Vociferous.

The group make their own rules through this debut commercial album, the only drawback in this album is it could be said they rely too much on the sporadic, yet husky voice of lead vocalist Kelii, I feel they would benefit from the use of harmonies on some of the tracks. As a debut album, it would be a necessity to take a closer look at this band as they have the potential to be the next big thing on the rock scene."

You can now request the video for '$$' on newly launched satellite music channel Lava TV (Sky Digital channel 378) by ringing 0800 6126229 and then typing in 0386 (free from landlines). Lava TV is the replacement for Rockworld TV and launched on March 29 2010 and is now owned by Mushroom. The band commented on the channel on their Facebook saying: "This is a really great new channel that is seriously championing lots of underground bands, as well as playing the bigger stuff, definitely check it out."

At the time of writing this, '$$' has been played on the channel at least twice.

The gig will kick off around 6pm and will finish for around 9pm according to the Roadhouse website. Tickets are £10 in advance. The band hit the stage just before 8.15pm and left around 8.35pm. Headline band 'The More I See' came on maybe ten-fifteen minutes afterwards. Obsessive Compulsive support SOULFLY tonight in Preston!

American band, Soulfly are kicking off a European tour tonight starting in Preston and they're taking Obsessive Compulsive along with them. Well, just for the Preston gig anyway. Standing tickets are £16 and can be bought here. The venue is the 53 Degrees Club, doors open at 7.30pm and there's a curfew of 11pm. The gig is 16+ only (ID recommended).

EDIT (4:30pm): According to Kelii, doors are at 7.30pm, Obsessive Compulsive will be on stage from 7.45pm and there's likely to be a big queue so it's important to get there as early as possible.

Manchester Music review of 'Dreams of Death...'

Little late posting this but below is a review by Manuel Ecostos for Manchester Music.

In it, Manuel talks about the band being one of the few rock bands in Manchester to continually fly the flag for dark metallised punk, his thoughts on the album and comparisons to other bands and styles.

"Obsessive Compulsive have been one of the few rock bands in Manchester to continually fly the flag for dark metallised punk. Despite a long apprenticeship this, their debut album is well worth the obvious work. They’ve taken a professional approach to the release via Vociferous Records and it pays off handsomely. The guitars ring out with solos that veer from simple one liners to pyrotechnic works that could easily be spliced from a G N’R album. The three male members of the band ensure that singer Kelii has a bedrock of Seattle rock, California punk and stoner sounds to play around with. “A Cocktail Of Toxins” is a grunge delight whilst “Spit The Medicine” provides an almost heavy industrial / metal ermm… cocktail. There are wide range of influences – “Virago” is another superb change in sound with its stop start combinations of rugged indie and melodic rock. Closing track “27 ½” is the band at their zenith, cramming all of these ideals into one progressive, nuclear anthem .

New T-Shirts on sale at gigs!

There are three new LIMITED EDITION T-shirts on sale at gigs the band are playing at the moment. The first of the t-shirts seemingly first went on sale at the release party at Retro Bar in Manchester on May 10th (?). This would make the first gig where any of the shirts were sold be The Rigger, Stoke on May 13th. The new designs are based on the cover of 'Dreams of Death and the Death of Dreams', designed by Carp and come in three different styles:

White shirt with Black/Red design

White shirt with Black/Purple design

White shirt with Black/Green design

At the Stoke gig, the red shirt was the only limited edition item on sale, priced at £12. The other designs should now be on sale at gigs.

Obsessive Compulsive featured on free CD of German Magazine

Obsessive Compulsive are featured on a free CD alongside issue 35 of Dark Spy Magazine released on May 7th. Dark Spy is a German magazine, so obviously the magazine is in German. Obsessive Compulsive can be found on the free CD with the magazine which also includes tracks from Lacrimosa, Bloody Dead Baby, statiCViolence and more. Currently we don't know which OC track is on the CD.

Newcastle gig tonight!

Obsessive Compulsive play a free gig at Legends in Newcastle upon Tyne tonight. The gig is free entry and the band will be on stage from 9pm. A rock/metal/punk club night will follow afterwards.
